Grocery stores on Kauai — stocking a rental kitchen on every shore.

Grocery shopping on Kauaʻi is easy once you know where the bigger stores are: most of them sit around Līhuʻe and the Kapaʻa–Wailua corridor on the east side, with smaller markets on the North Shore, the South Shore and the west side. This guide explains where to shop on each shore, what to buy on the first day, and when it is simpler to let a chef do the shopping for the nights you want cooked.

How grocery shopping works on Kauaʻi

Most food on Kauaʻi, as on every Hawaiian island, arrives by ship, so supermarket prices are higher than on the mainland and some items run short before the next delivery. Local produce, fish and eggs are the exceptions worth seeking out. You will find island chains, a warehouse club, big-box stores and small town markets, plus weekly farmers markets.

Kauaʻi has one main road that circles most of the island, and the stores follow the towns. That makes the order of your shop more important than the store: buy the big items where the big stores are, then top up near the house.

Līhuʻe: the airport run

Līhuʻe, where the airport is, has the island’s largest stores, including Costco near the airport and Walmart in town, as well as supermarkets. Costco needs a membership, but it is the place for cases of water, coffee, snacks and beach supplies for a large group.

Most visitors do one big shop between landing and checking in. Bring a cooler bag for the drive, especially if you are heading north, and keep it short if the group is tired; you can top up later. Our Līhuʻe restaurants guide covers eating around the airport on arrival day.

East Side: Kapaʻa and Wailua

The Kapaʻa–Wailua corridor north of Līhuʻe has the next cluster of full-size supermarkets, including Safeway in Kapaʻa and Foodland at Waipouli, along with health-food stores and small markets. If you are staying on the east side, this is your weekly shop, and it is the last full-size option on the way to the North Shore.

Traffic through Kapaʻa slows in the afternoons, so morning shopping is quicker. Our Kapaʻa restaurants guide covers the food side of town.

North Shore: Princeville and Hanalei

Princeville has a Foodland, and Hanalei and Kīlauea have smaller markets and natural-food stores. Choice is narrower and prices are higher than in Līhuʻe, so many North Shore guests stock up on the way in and use the local stores for fresh items.

Heavy rain can close the Hanalei bridge and cut off the shore beyond it, so anyone staying past Hanalei should keep a few days of basics in the house. Our North Shore Kauai dining guide covers restaurants on that coast.

South Shore and the west side

Kōloa town, a few minutes from Poʻipū, has a supermarket and small markets, and Big Save, Kauaʻi’s own supermarket chain, has stores in several towns including Kōloa, Hanapēpē and Waimea. For a big shop, Poʻipū guests usually drive to Līhuʻe, about half an hour away.

On the west side, Hanapēpē and Waimea are the last real stops before the canyon roads and Polihale, so fill the cooler there. The Poʻipū restaurants guide is useful if you are weighing a dinner out against cooking.

Farmers markets, fish and local produce

Kauaʻi’s weekly farmers markets are the best place for local fruit, greens, avocados and flowers, and many run for only a couple of hours, so arrive early with small bills. Our Kauai farmers market guide lists how they work for a rental week.

For fish, look for poke counters and fish cases in the bigger supermarkets, and ask what came in fresh. When we cook, the fish on the menu is named as the species we actually bought that day, not a guess.

A first-day list for a rental kitchen

Before you shop, check what the rental already has: oil, salt, spices, foil, coffee filters and dish soap are often there, and good knives often are not. Then keep the first shop simple: coffee, breakfast, fruit, water, snacks for the beach, one easy dinner and ice for the cooler.

Leave the bigger cooking plans until you have seen the kitchen. Condo galleys and estate kitchens differ a lot, and a two-ring cooktop changes what dinner for ten looks like.

When to let a chef do the shopping

Shopping for a group on vacation takes hours: the drive, the queue, carrying it in, then the cooking and the washing up. For the nights that matter, a personal chef Kauai dinner takes all of that off your list. The chef plans the menu with you, shops on the day, cooks, serves and leaves the kitchen clean.

On Signature dinners the groceries are included in the per-guest price. On Stay Chef days, groceries are billed at cost with the receipts, as our short groceries at cost note explains.

Bigger groups and longer stays

A family reunion or a wedding-week party of 10 to 75 guests is Kauai catering: a staffed buffet, family-style or plated meal at the house, with servers at $80 an hour and a sous-chef at $105 an hour as their own lines. Tables, linens and tents are not included unless you ask.

For a longer stay, a chef for several days often costs less in time and stress than a week of supermarket runs, and the shopping is planned around the menu, not the other way round.
